Adams Update – Returning to school, school choice, winter weather and more…

Happy New Year!

Dear Adams Families,

We are excited to be welcoming students and families back to school on TUESDAY to resume classes for the 2018-2019 school year.  I hope that families were able to enjoy some extra time with kiddos over the break and are ready to be back this week.

Please note that students return on Tuesday, January 8th for classes.  January 7th is a NO SCHOOL/PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAY for all 4J staff.

Please help your student to be ready for Tuesday by resuming regular bedtime and morning routines tonight and tomorrow.  Other ways you can help your child return to school and foster growing independence are:

  • have them choose what to wear the night before
  • plan for breakfast and lunches, have them help prepare if possible
  • talk with them about what they are looking forward to with returning to school
  • review morning routines at school; hanging up pack, greeting friends, morning meeting
  • review after-school plans and routines; childcare, transportation, homework habits

Helping student to become more independent at home and at school helps them to be empowered each day and engaged in their own social, emotional and academic growth.

It’s School Choice Season.

Please see below for information about the school choice process specific to Adams.

  • If you have a student already at Adams through school choice, there is nothing you need to do.
  • If you have second child who will be starting kindergarten in the fall, and you live outside the Adams attendance area, you need to apply for school choice of you’d like that child to be with us here at Adams.
  • Parents of 5th graders who may want to attend a middle school other than their neighborhood school need to apply for school choice as well.
  • PLEASE NOTE:  IF YOU ARE IN THE ADAMS ATTENDANCE AREA AND WILL HAVE A KINDERGARTEN STUDENT IN THE FALL, WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU AND BEGIN THE ENROLLMENT PROCESS NOW.

School Choice In 4J

In Eugene School District 4J, every school offers an excellent education for our students. Students may enroll in their neighborhood school at any time, or request enrollment in a different 4J school, provided there is a place available. Out-of-district residents also are welcome to apply for a transfer to 4J in March.

School choice requests are accepted in an order determined by lottery. To be included in the lottery, 4J residents must apply by Thursday, January 31.

Non-district residents must apply between March 1–31.

All students who want to obtain a transfer must apply, including new incoming siblings, students who have moved out of the neighborhood or district but want to stay enrolled at their current school, and incoming high school students seeking to enroll in an International High School program.

If you have any friends or family members who are considering school choice, please invite them to come learn more about 4J’s many wonderful schools and their school choice options!

Wondering About Winter Weather?

Though we have not had any hazardous weather yet thi year, please be aware that schools may be closed or delayed or buses may use snow routes when we do.  School districts decide early in the morning whether there is a need to change the school schedule or bus routes. These decisions are made districtwide and are the same for every 4J school.

There are several ways to find out if there is a change on snowy or icy days:

Text-message alerts via Twitter — sign up through Twitter or just text FOLLOW 4JWEATHER to 40404
4J website, www.4j.lane.edu
KRVM 91.9 FM
Other radio and television news stations

If there is a school closure or other change, the school district will announce it before 6:30 a.m. If schools and buses are on their regular schedule, there will NOT be an announcement.

Parents of students who ride school buses that have alternate snow routes have been informed of what to do. Snow route information is available on the snow routes page.

If school is in session, families are encouraged to consider road conditions in their areas and make their own decisions based on safety. Parents’ individual decisions about school attendance will be honored.
