Welcome to Adams for 2018-19!

Dear Adams Elementary School Families,

Welcome new and returning families to the 2018-19 school year at Adams Elementary.  It has been a hot summer. I hope you are thirsty for knowledge!   We’ve been busy here at school planning and preparing to welcome a new batch of learners and help them grow.  It’s going to be a great year!

Our class lists and master schedule are still subject to change as enrollment fluctuates, so we are not able to publish them at this time.  Thank you for your understanding.

Class lists for 1st through 5th grades will be posted on the afternoon of Friday, August 31st

Back to School Night – September 4th

Our Back to School Night will be September 4th from 5:00 to 6:30.   Doors will open for kindergarteners at 4:30 so that they may get in ahead of the crowd (Kinder parents see below).  At this time you will be able to meet teachers, visit the classroom, reconnect with parents and classmates and drop off supplies and fees.  We hope that this visit will help kids feel more comfortable on the first day of school.

At 5:45, we will adjourn to the playground for refreshments and socializing.  Parents will also have the chance to acquaint themselves with PTA officers, learn about events during the year and meet providers of some after-school opportunities for Adams students.  Adams has a thriving PTA that sponsors this event and supports enrichment activities enjoyed by all students at Adams. We encourage and appreciate your involvement.

The night ends at 6:30 so that everyone can be well-rested for the first day of class on September 5th.

Open House Orientation for kindergarten families is scheduled for Thursday, August  30th.

School starts on Wednesday, September 5 for all kindergarten students.  Our cafeteria is open at 8:00 for any students who would like to have breakfast here at school.  First bell is at 8:25 and instruction begins at 8:30.  Students should be in classrooms by 8:30.  School is dismissed at 3:00 Monday through Thursday and at 1:45 on Fridays.

The first week of school will be “Kinderzone” time. Starting this year, we are introducing Kinderzone in all 4J elementary schools to better serve our students’ needs.

During Kinderzone, the first three days of school, kindergarten students will interact with all of the kindergarten teachers and other school staff members. Teachers will observe, assess and get to know each child during this time.  Kindergarteners will not be assigned a classroom teacher before school begins. After meeting students and visiting with parents, teachers will be better able to develop class lists based on students’ academic and social needs. This will allow purposeful placement of your child in a kindergarten class for an optimal kindergarten year.

On time, all day: We ask for your help in making your child’s first days go as smoothly as possible by having your child arrive on time, not taking them home early, and allowing them to fully experience the school day on their own. You are a valued part of the team and will have many opportunities to be involved in the classroom after the school year gets underway. It is important for your student to be at school on time and for the full day—every day, at every grade level—and it is especially critical to get a strong start with on-time attendance at the beginning of the year.

We are very excited to have your student in kindergarten this year, and to have your family be a part of the Adams community. Watch for more information about curriculum night and other events in the near future.  We look forward to welcoming your child to school on Wednesday, September 5.

School Supply Lists and Contributions –

During Back to School Night you may drop off school supplies and contributions with your child’s teacher.  You may bring cash, check or money order for supply contributions.  Checks should be made to ADAMS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

***Our teachers depend on family contributions to purchase classroom supplies for students.  Contributions go directly into the classroom for supplies.  We understand that not everyone is able to make this financial commitment and it is not required.

Drop off and Pick Up

As a Premier Green School, we encourage parents and students to travel to and from

school by walking, biking, carpooling and taking the bus. For those families who need to

drive to and from school it is important that traffic rules are observed to create the safest

possible environment for all the students entering and leaving the building on three

streets.

For all drop-off and pickup areas:

  • Please remind students to always cross the street in the crosswalks.
  • Please DO NOT block crosswalks with your vehicle.
  • Please do not park in any area marked yellow.
  • Please only drop off students on the school side of the street.

  1. Buses drop off and pick up students on 22nd Street. Parents should not drop off

students on 22nd Street when buses are present or at times of high traffic. Visibility is

very poor when the buses are in the street.

  1. Upper Wing students may be dropped off by parents on Adams Street. The church

has graciously allowed parents to park temporarily while they walk their child to class.

  1. The safest drop-off and pickup zone to use is in the parking lot.Parents should not wait in parked cars in the parking lot for their children as they often run across the parking lot to meet parents in parked cars. Please help keep the traffic here flowing by moving forward as possible. Please do not idle in the drop-off lane.

The safety of the children is our number one priority. Please allow plenty of time to get

to and from school, obey speed limits, and drive respectfully and carefully. Your

cooperation is greatly appreciated!

Shout Outs!

I would personally like to take this opportunity to thank Cris Specht, Sharon Reel, Randy Bonney and Kimberly Holliday, our wonderful office and custodial staff, for all they have done to make the building and systems ready for kids and teachers.  We are a lucky school to have such talented people behind the scenes.

I am also very appreciative of New Hope Church and Friendly Street Church for helping to prepare our grounds, stock our shelves and provide additional resources for our students.
